I'm assuming the N54 are roller tappets/followers and if so it would seem hard to believe they are wearing out in under 100k mi. OHC w/roller tappets have been around (and popular) for a good 25+ years- not exactly a new technology.

It could be a case of improper heat treating on the cam. If so that can often happen only in certain batches.
