Welcome to the oil wars. There are many, many threads on this subject.
In General…
Oil: Anything with BMW’s LL-01 approval. BMW’s own oil from the dealer and Mobil 1 0W-40 (and only their 0W-40) are the easiest to find. Get the filters at the dealer if you are doing it yourself.
How often:
Option 1: Go with the BMW program.
Option 2: Do an “extra” change in between BMW’s
Option 2a: Also do a change at 1500 miles (post break in).
