FWIW I never had any problems with my 320i which I bought new in 2008. If (and I suppose it's a big "if") you get one with no faults then it's a much nicer engine than the 320d which sounds like a London taxi. It's not as powerful as the 320d but the rev-range makes it more fun to drive, imo.
