You can buy an extended warranty from BMWUSA from any dealer as long as the car is under it's original factory warranty. Cost is negotiable, ranges from ~$2400-~$3500 for 2 years/100K.

There have been no transmission changes other than programming. Puerto-rico is likely referring to the SCR/EGR recall that included a new DDE (ECU) program from 2 years ago; likely it's been done but you need to check.
