If he's not cornering at the limit (or what he thinks is the limit), then throttle-induced oversteer and lift-throttle "understeer" could be what he's observing. Because when he's lifting, his rear still has plenty of traction (not at the limit). When he's oversteering its wheelspin/throttle induced.
