This design by Mclaren has something to do with the placement of the cooling components which were moved to accomodate for the larger fuek tank while the Renault design was just a way to help aero stability

In a sunny wind calm day this might help stability, but in windy days the car might become unstable when it encounter cross-wind. Like Silverstone 2008
