I did something very similar two years ago, think I have a thread on it... Walmart MAXX battery, think they gave it a different model name back then, paid a similar price too.
I found an independent to register the battery for cheap. A short while later, I found the registration resource you refer to. Super idea for many reasons.
After two years and more than 30k miles, all is well.
