That's true, and I was definitely in a rush to get out the door and meant to say "yes, I know I'm low on gas, not what I'm talking about." But I figured specifying "warning to the top right of my shift indicator," coupled with the obviousness of a gas light, would be enough specificity. Seems that's not so.
