90% of the detachables have the ball and mounting arm as one casting that fits into the socket under the car, so no, the ball isn't interchangeable.

The English firm "Witter" used to do a detachable towbar which had a flange plate for mounting a standard 50mm ball, with a couple of large nuts/bolts. These flanges were also able to accommodate a 2" ball which had the same bolt hole pitch. Here in the UK, it's only some farm machinery that uses 2" these days, and often the 2" ball comes with a pin hitch too (where the trailer has just an eye for a coupling, with lots of play and rattle). Witter may still make these, but generally the socket is still visible under the car; The socket is aligned horizontally. On my car, which has a "Westphalia" towbar, the socket is aligned vertically. BMW uses Westphalia as OEM, but the E9x has an electrically operated towball, where you press a switch and the ball drops down. You have to manually retract it though.
