As Steve says, in the great scheme of things the number of cars with problems is going to be very small. However, the percentage of people who complain about a problem is much higher than the number that will praise a car that has given them no trouble. Have a look at a few other forums and you'll find it's the same everywhere.
In general the 320d must be a pretty good car as it's BMWs best seller. Yes, there have been issues over the years (swirl flaps and turbo failures on high mile E46s), but the continual improvements mean that these have been addressed and there doesn't (yet) seem to be a systematic problem with the E90.
In fact, aside from fuel pump issues on the early 335i that are well documented here the main issues for the E9xseem to have been more minor niggles and dealer prep problems, compounded by the inability of certain dealers (not just those taking a pasting at the moment) to rectify those in a timely and respectful manner.
