They have to take out the ECU and remap it, with a E46 there was a plug they could use so the ECU could stay in the car during the 'upgrade'.
There are 2 types of tuners, the ones that remap your ECU with a 'standard' program, and the ones that extensively optimize the ECU for max performance and safety on your engine. The latter also provide you with a before and after dyno test.
I called my BMW dealer to inform about the warranty: he assures me they CAN detect the modification, and your waranty will be void. He also told me he has never seen any problems with a remapped engine  |
DMS just plug in - they don't remove the ECU. They have all the BMW diagnostic kit and are definite that it cannot be detected.
However, it's going to be fairly obvious when you drive it that something is up.
