Cutting a resonator in half to shorten it - Is that ok?

So I want to throw in a set of resonators just to take out a tiny bit of rasp I am experiencing, without taming the exhaust any further, I like a loud exhaust.

However I don't really have room in the midpipes to throw in a full 12" resonators so I was thinking of cutting it in half into a 6" resonator and welding in only 6 inches of the resonator right before the mufflers or right after the downpipes, wherever I can make them fit. Or I could cut out the middle 4-5 inches of the resonator and then weld the two ends of the resonator together without the middle 4-5 inches.

Will cutting a resonator damage its functionality?
