I got a chance to travel much of the region in early-mid '91 and then in '95-98. We were always herded and kept in our compounds or allowed out and about with designated gov't handlers during that time - for our safety, of course  . |

It’s very different now, even in the stalwarts like Saudi. Much more open, and no movement restrictions anymore. Not much to do or see though, so that’s about similar to back then.
