OK guys. After reading all this, I decided to forge ahead. I found a kit for my 2009 328i. The part number for the kit that I was given was 61110428194. This does not include the center console switch. Since I have no PDC, nav, etc., I just needed the seat heater switches. It's a European kit, but I don't see why it won't work on US cars.
Installation instructions are online and look quite simple. No worse than the other aftermarket kits I have installed.
The big this is coding. Found a local guy who can do it for $250 (ouch!) but hopefully it will be worth it.
All said and done, I am expecting it to cost around $650. We'll see if we can make that target.
