I useed to do tracking many, many moons ago and it was not unusual to find the rear out of track, enough to make the car tend to drift to one side slightly, meaning you always adjust by steering off centre. So what they say is possible.

When I did 4 wheel tracking (lots of cords and mirrors), most people just bunged a couple of mirror guages on the front (and sometimes rear with FWD, and rear trailing arms). No real way then to check if your aligned front and rear were even on the same central axis.
