Speaking as a DSLR 'beginner' myself, NFS, I think the kit lens will help you to become accustomed to using the camera, starting with the basics.

I'm still 'playing with the 450d & the 18-55mm kit lens. It might be a 'beginner's' lens, but it works well & lets me 'experiment':
