If a car guy asks you how much you paid for a specific part (ESPECIALLY at a friggin car meet) and you get offended, you're the tool. He's asking because he loves X mod that you've done and wants to know if it's in the affordable ball park for him.
Unless the guy is absolutely annoying you should just tell him and put not one thought into it.
