Opening the hood probably allowed more oxygen to fuel the fire .... it reminded of what happened to one of my tuna fishing ship ... there was a electrical wiring that that caused a fire in the engine room... the captain opened the engine room hatch when he should of closed that thing shut so no oxygen goes in.
Unfortunately at the time I did not expect a fire nor did I think of closing the hood after opening it. If it was open or closed, I still expect the fire to have caused as much damage, as there would have been oxygen from underneath the car.
Indeed, wouldn't blame yourself for that one - it was going up, very little you could've done unfortunately.
