From what I've read on this forum, whatever the last POI criteria that you searched, will appear as icons on the map.
So if the last POI you searched were restaurants, then restaurant icons will appear on the map.
I searched for a golf course the other day and after I found my desination there were a whole bunch of little golf icons telling me where all the other courses/golf shops were...
pretty good tool!
