Context is important. jsunma is referring only to this one post, where a rear seat is down and stuff isn't tied down.

That said though, I'm not sure I'd trust the latches on flip down rear seats to hold a full size spare in a significant event. Nothing like a wheel to the back of the head to mess you up. I'd say secure those things.
