My iPhone4 is well over a year old, has never had a screen protector and apart from fingerprints, looks much as it always has done. On my iPad2, I use one of this magnetic covers that goes over the screen and doubles upas a stand...a great design!

And to be fair, our old 3GS only ever picked up 1 visible scratch in the hands of a child. Lots of minor scratches but they weren't noticeable with the screen on. Survived multiple drops too.
