There's limp mode on the E46 M3s too, or rather, warning lights that tells you of impending doom.

I believe that when oil temp reaches 305 degrees the S54 will act the same. I've seen/heard of this only once though, at a track day where Tarmac temps were registering 160 degrees plus. Coolant temp, I believe, does not trigger "limp" mode like the N54 does. You just get the idiot light when coolant is above a certain level.
