I think the earlier E90's did have harder suspension.
As an instance my 2005 320i SE seemed to give a firmer i.e a less resilient ride than my current 2009 320D M-Sport, which can give a superb ride on good road surfaces. Potholes, it dos'nt like, but certainlly is better than the 2005 SE.
