Winter / tire dilemma, advice needed.

So here's the deal... I live in SE Michigan (downtown Detroit) and winter is coming quick. I'm trying to decide if I should: a) buy all-season or snow tires for my e90, or b) buy a winter beater (probably '00-'05 Jeep Cherokee).

For one though, I don't know if the all-season Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires are good enough for midwest winter? Anyone have experience with them please share.

Two, I don't know if I want to buy a crappy will probably need some work high mileage Cherokee. My commute to work is very, very short at .6 miles... but the days I need to go to the grocery store / run errands, visit mom are the days I'm worried about.

My car is a '07 335i. Maybe I should've bought an xi...
