For general information, a good drive shaft shop can shorten a drive shaft and re-balance it in a matter of minutes (worth of work) and it is not very expensive.

Back in the day, we would have them fabricate new shafts, using the existing ends and it was never a problem. These guys do a lot more work with trucks and equipment, but the process is exactly the same, the shaft has to be straight and balanced to run smoothly.
