I just used
d * v^2 / 2 (Bernoulli), where
d is the air density and
v the car speed. Thinking about it some more, this is probably a horrible estimate, but I can't think of anything better
Since he said the windows and the sunroof were all shut, I assumed the car is like a big pitot tube, with the interior at total pressure, and the air moving past the car the static pressure. Again, I suspect this is a really bad estimate.
With all windows closed, I would bet the air pressure is lower outside a closed sunroof. I never tried this on my ED, but do your ears feel a pressure increase when you close your sunroof at highway speeds?
Your explanation is another possibility.
And regardless, I bet it's a defect, not rocks.
