I've been looking into the cost, too, as I suspect my cv joint might be drying up. Looks like its about 2-3 hours labor each side, parts range from $10 ea boot kit (aftermarket) to $40-50 ea boot kit (oem). There are 4 boots total, although most search results point to outer boot going bad more often than the inner (I know for a fact I saw my inner boot twisted when installing struts). I plan on having all 4 boots replaced at local bmw indy, that's if my cv joints are even still good...
Also, this as a DIY does look pretty difficult if you aren't experienced (I'm not).
