For what it is worth, I have some experience with the AFE and I would say that it barely sounds louder than stock under most circumstances.
Also, and this may be more of a point for you to research, as you reach and pass the 400 whp mark, tuners suggest upgrading the intake. I recall the advice being to get a DCI, but I could be wrong. I'd imagine a DCI has more flow capacity.
Regarding the 400whp mark, you can hit that with E85 (and a tune, of course) and no other mods save for an upgraded intake. If you plan on going this route, I'd suggest you call a tuner or two and ask.
