if you were to go pop your hood... you'd see that there is a plastic tube that sucks in air that flows in through the grille, through a long black hose, through the filter box and into the engine. well when you drive, that air smashes into the radiator and some of it will get sucked into the intake. However with the scoops, its redirecting a larger % of that air into the intake which will increase the amount of "colder" air to be combusted in the cylinders (since it doesn't have time to be warmed by the heat off the engine) and since colder air is denser, it creates more power during combustion which will obviously make the car go faster.
