I had the same problem with a NATO tax free car. It too was a UK car with a V5 but it said on the V5 something like Manufactured 2007, First registered 2008, Number of previous keepers unknown and it was that statement which was confusing dealers on trade in.
I called DVLA and they have a special investigations dept who sorted it all out.
