But 100 is hot, 70 is mild, 40 is fairly cold, so calling it 40% hot doesn't help in my view.

In Celsius, 0 is freezing. 100 is boiling. And then for daily temps, 0 is once again freezing, 10 is cold. 20 is mild. 30 is warm. 40 is hot. 50 is really hot. Easy enough to deal with.
