You, Sir, have made my week!
My paddles are now working thanks to the great advice of BQ05. The wires from my paddles were in fact in the wrong pin locations so that no signal was transmitted through to the multifunction buttons and onto the transmission. And I had to desolder the resistors of course.
I can shift in D and DS by the way.
