I totally understand, my 245/40/18 is a compromise too (I wanted to somewhat balance the rear's 285), 235 is a very good choice like **********s recommends. I had 235 on my previous 18x8.5 VMR VB3 and they do look perfect. Maybe you should rethink the RFT stuff...I made the switch some time ago and I have never looked back. I keep a Continental ContiComfortKit in the trunk and that's it.
However keep in mind that 245/40/18 is what the e9x M3 uses from factory on the 260M wheels. And it looks pretty good by my standards. I really like that muscular look and I was trying to somewhat reproduce it on my car.
