I did this once and I am not if the car needed to be cycled on and off, but when I started the car, the car was reving up and down rapidly. This is why I said to do it with the engine running.
I actually did the same thing. The key was on and I reset it without the engine on and did exactly as you said.
On the laptop in the lower left hand side of the screen, it will say resetting and let you know when it's finished.
