Replaced my dead battery a few days ago at 87k miles (6.5 years it lasted). Before installing the new battery from the dealership (cost $229 plus tax) I was told as long as I matched my battery with a similar model and specs (Exide brand supplied for BMW from the dealership), that I wouldn't have to reset or register the new battery. Only issue after replacing the battery was a CC ID 259 window anti-trap deactivated error code occurred and it was a simple fix.
No other issues after install. Will post any problems I may get if I do.
