I think if you go 18's you're just going to feel that regret you didn't get 19's. As to the wheels, they'll hold up to the potholes, and if they don't it isn't that expensive to replace the wheel. That said don't go driving into pot holes
Ultimately its your call at the end, and you should do what you feel would make you the happiest.
