can check insurance status via http://askmid.co.uk -- very useful
I didn't know that site even existed. Oddly my car shows up as uninsured and it definitely isn't.

On the other hand I got stopped in my previous car because the computer showed it has being untaxed, annoying 20 minute wait while rude policeman decides it was taxed and that the computer was sometimes wrong.

Same previous car couldn't buy road tax online as the computer decided the registration plate and log book number didn't tie up and the muppet from DVLA insisted I must have changed the plates at some point - got put through to a specialist department who admitted the computer was wrong in loads of cases and sorted it all out.

Moral of the story - a) the government can't do databases (if they ever get the ID scheme in place half of us will spend our time trying to prove we are who we say we are) b) Dont trust the above site.

I just put in the number of my previous car from which I transferred the insurance to my current car - apparently that car (an E46) is insured but is now miraculously a Vauxhall Vectra not a BMW anymore. What a load of bollox.
