Actually, it depends on what county you live in which determines what tests are done in California.

If you live an a "smog zone"- basically counties with big cities in them, you have a more comprehensive test that includes a visual inspection, OBD connection and "snap throttle opacity" test. If your readiness codes (via OBD) are not set, you will fail inspection.

Note that diesels do not undergo a rolling dyno test like our gas counterparts.

I long for the days that diesels were exempt from smog checks in CA... only three years ago.
