Oil level when cold

Hi all

Decided to check oil level after the car has been sitting in the garage for a couple of days. Bit surprised to see it half way between min and max.

As my car never uses oil since I've owned it and the oil was changed in dec I took it for a drive.

After the drive and after waiting 10 mins like the manual says it was back to read pretty much on max.

If anything I thought on cold it would overread as the oil drains into the sump. Curious to know why it's the opposite of what I thought.

It is 0c outside now and oil is cold but I didn't think thermal expansion was an issue?

Cheers
