This has been recently covered all over various tech blogs. If you currently have an unlimited data plan for the 3G or 3GS, you can upgrade to iPhone 4 without being forced to adopt the new 2GB capped plan. Only catch is, as others already pointed out, you can't get the official AT&T tethering option tacked on unless you ditch the unlimited plan. All problems are solved with a jailbreak though...
