There is no set mileage or time frame for the shocks to go out as it is highly dependent on road conditions, driving habits and previous wear on the shocks. I typically recommend biting the bullet and doing it all at once to save on labor by having the springs and shocks swapped out at the same time. The amount of work is the same either way and you end up paying labor twice by having the shocks done separately down the road.
