On some policies it does - the policy is based on legal use of the car, specifically that it is MOT'd (where appropriate) and taxed. Whilst the police may not know the intricacies of a policy, you can bet your insuarance company do - if you were in a claim situation in an untaxed car the insurer
could refuse a payout.
With a brand new car at risk, I'll err on the side of caution.
