Did you go to the UPS depot, or just to a shipping store? Depot price can be a lot different.
Consider shipping them in 4 boxes, as well. You pack them and deliver to the depot.
I just did a sample calculation on the UPS site, figuring 40 pounds per box, and using San Francisco to DC as a close approximation of your shipment. Web site quoted $53.33 per box, including $100 insurance, delivered to a residential address. Additional insurance is extra.
Do you know what they actually weigh?
