Even if you are correct (and you might not be - it's a debateable point for sure) production costs are only part of the picture. There are regulatory compliance concerns, and this new engine should help lower emissions just like the N20 is doing vs. the N52.

More highly questionable, largely baseless opinion. As far as half an engine goes, today's 316i or 320i have half on a M3 engine too. So who gives a rats ass if another engine exists in the lineup with half the cylinder count and displacement of a larger engine?
