Cheers for the response people. This was my original guess, that the steering wheel had been disconnected following removal but this wasn't the case.
A friend of mine who is a technician at Sytner BMW Birmingham fitted the steering rack and he informed me that the wheel was not removed at all. The wheels were re-aligned at my local tyre specialist and they obviously didn't remove the wheel as the problem was noticed before I took it to them.
I've read that there could be a problem with the ribbon breaking and that this is a common fault? Don't get me wrong I'll certainly remove the wheel and have a check to make sure it is all plugged in and correct.
Really frustrated as I've been through the mill with trying to get the rack sorted under independent warranty which was unsuccessful. My experience with Warrantywise is one for another day!!!
