Road bikes from 2013 are certainly not as well specced as bikes from 2011/12 but a bike for Planet X with a full carbon frame and SRAM Rival group set is hardly a bad bike.

I borrowed a 2005 Trek 5500 with full DuraAce group set (£2.5k at time) for a recent LEJOG ride and now have a 2011 Trek 3.1 with mix of Ultegra/105 and DuraAce wheels (bought 2nd hand for £1.1k).

Though the older Trek was a bit lighter riding wise the 3.1 is every bit as nice as the 5500, and infact the frame is a lot stiffer. You need to spend £1.7k-2k before you start getting full ultegra groupset compared to 105 but certainly for people who aren't racing I'm not sure the extra £500-1k for a Ultegra group set is worth it over 105.

Yes the finishing kit on £1k bikes isn't amazing but again handlebars/saddles/seat posts don't really make massive differences to how the bike rides and all quote easy/cheap to upgrade.
