On my 2009 E90, there is no star button on the steering wheel, so my options are:
1) Push the on/off volume button on the dash. This will "pause" the iPod.
or
2) Switch to Radio
3) I have noticed that when making a phone call, the car does not automatically pause the iPod (which is annoying: my old E39 would pause the CD Changer automatically when I made a call on my BMW CPT8000 telephone). What I have found easiest to do is to switch to the radio (which I can do with the steering wheel button that replaces the "star" button on the 2009's) and then make the call. When the call is over, I toggle back from the Radio to the iPod. This is stupid, but it allows me to do the entire operation from the steering wheel.
I still don't understand why BMW dropped the "star" button from the steering wheel on the 2009's. My guess is that they surveyed folks and found that nobody used it. But I would kill to have it. (And I'd like more than 6 assignable preset buttons on the stereo!)
