If your fueling is not tuned for the % amount of added E85 yes it will throw a code and you will get a CEL
You were runing the wrong map for the fuel you added. 2 gals of E85 to a half tank is almost E30. In Florida expecially Shell E85 has been tested to be E90.
Your fuel trims were more likely maxing out that threw a code followed by a CEL
