I got this warning light for adaptive headlights a couple weeks ago, and sure enough, while driving, the headlamps wouldn't turn ahead of me (god what spoiled brats we are!).

The code went away the next day (two weeks ago now), and hasn't returned, and the lamps are functioning fine since. My mechanic tells me the part has a history of wearing down and eventually failing, and the replacement parts are in the $850+ range (says I'll need the entire assembly).

Couple questions:

1) WTF?
2) Will the lamps default to straight if it fails, and if so, is the obnoxious headlamp feature worth spending that kind of cake on?
3) Isn't there a cheaper way to fix this, like just replacing the motor on the AHL? I can't seem to find anything the above poster mentioned...

My tech tells me this is a progressive issue, and it will get worse, eventually failing 100% of the time. He advised me to sit tight and wait till it completely fails.
