I wouldn't bother with a screen protector on the newer kit as they all have scratch resistant screens. Unless you're a total baffoon and smack it into walls all the time, it won't get damaged. I find the protectors make the touchscreen less pleasant to use - it somehow takes some of the response and smoothness away.
My iPhone4 is well over a year old, has never had a screen protector and apart from fingerprints, looks much as it always has done. On my iPad2, I use one of this magnetic covers that goes over the screen and doubles upas a stand...a great design!
